Mills on Bornholm

Bornholm is a true "mill paradise" - here you find all types of mills - water mills, post mills and Dutch mills.

The island offers 3 preserved water mills; Slusegårds Vandmølle at the mouth of the stream Øle Å in Pedersker, Vang Vandmølle and Ågårds Vandmølle also near the stream Øle Å. For centuries, Bornholm has had many water mills along the streams of the island and the early so-called "splashing mills" (plaskemøller) were replaced by the water mills, which we know today.

The post mills were introduced on Bornholm in the 16th century. The mill itself is in balance and rests on a horizontal, heavy "post" in the middle of the mill. On top of the post lies an equally heavy "crown tree", on which the entire mill hangs. On a post mill the entire mill is turned against the wind. The 3 preserved post mills of the island are Bechs Mølle in Svaneke, Egeby Mølle in Åker and Tejn Mølle.

The Dutch mills are very common on Bornholm. This type of mill was imported from Holland in the middle of the 18th century. On a Dutch mill only the hat with the sails turns against the wind. The 13 preserved Dutch mills on Bornholm are Kirkemøllen in Pedersker, Myreagre Mølle on the road between Åkirkeby and Nexø, Bornholms Valsemølle in Åkirkeby, Saxebro Mølle in Åker, Limensgade Mølle in Åker, Bakkemøllen in Nexø, Årsdale Mølle, Gudhjem Mølle, Stenby Mølle in Rø, Svanemøllen in Svaneke, Kuremøllen in Østermarie, Bymøllen in Rutsker and last not least the Røbro Mølle in Rø.

Many of the mills of the island are open to the public, but others are in private property and offer no access.

Visit for example Årsdale Mølle and see how a real Ducht mill looks like - the mill is working at a wind force of 4 metres per second or more. Or visit the Bornholm Rolling Mill (Bornholms Valsemølle), which for decades has delivered first quality flour for the bakers of the island and aware consumers or the restored Kuremølle in Østermarie, which is open for the public during the summer season.
